spenser: a day in the life of a labrador retriever

"Dogs are our links to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring, it was peace.--- Milan Kundera"

Things We Can Learn From A Dog

A friend from work gave me this poem. She's not sure who the author is but I thought it was really good.

Never pass the opportunity to go for a joyride
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstacy.
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
When it's your best interest, practice obedience.
Let others know when they've invaded your territory.
Take naps and stretch before rising.
Run, romp and play daily.
East with gusto and enthusiasm.
Be loyal.
Never pretend to be something you're not.
If what you want lies buried, dig unti you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.
Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
On hot days, drink lots of water and lay under a shady tree.
When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
No matter how often you're scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout.
Run right back and make friends.
Deligh in the simple jog of a long walk.

Spenser's 1st Halloween

Since I'm a chocolate labrador, my dad Neil decided that I will be like a Hershey's chocolate bar as my costume. We were going to surprise Mom when she come's home. The costume lasted for less than 5 minutes before it collapsed.

I AM A DOG

AM YOUR DOG
Author Unknown

I am your dog, and I have a little something I'd like to whisper in
your ear. I know that you humans lead busy lives. Some have to work,
some have children to raise. It always seems like you are running here
and there, often much too fast, often never noticing the truly grand
things in life. Look down at me now, while you sit there at your
computer.

See the way my green eyes look at yours? You smile at me; I see
love in your eyes. What do you see in mine? Do you see a spirit? A
soul inside, who loves you as no other could in the world? A spirit
that would forgive all trespasses of prior wrong doing for just a
simple moment of your time? That is all I ask. To slow down, if even
for a few minutes to be with me.

Sometimes a dog dies young and oh so quickly, so suddenly it wrenches
your heart out of your throat. Sometimes, we age so slowly before your
eyes that you may not even seem to know until the very end, when we
look at you with grizzled muzzles and cataract clouded eyes. Still the
love is always there, even when we must take that long sleep, to run
free in a distant land. I may not be here tomorrow; I may not be here
next week. Someday you will shed the water from your eyes, that humans
have when deep grief fills their souls, and you will be angry at
yourself that you did not have just "One more day" with me. Because I
love you so, your sorrow touches my spirit and grieves me.

We have NOW, together. So come, sit down here next to me on the floor,
and look deep into my eyes. What do you see? If you look hard and deep
enough we will talk, you and I, heart to heart. Come to me not as
"alpha" or as "trainer" or even "Mom or Dad," come to me as a living
soul and stroke my fur and let us look deep into one another's eyes,
and talk. I may tell you something about the fun of chasing a tennis
ball, or I may tell you something profound about myself, or even life
in general. You decided to have me in your life because you wanted a
soul to share such things with. Someone very different from you, and
here I am.

I am a dog, but I am alive. I feel emotion, I feel physical senses, and
I can revel in the differences of our spirits and souls. I do not think
of you as a "Dog on two feet" -- I know what you are. You are human, in
all your quirkiness, and I love you still. Now, come sit with me, on
the floor. Enter my world, and let time slow down if only for 15
minutes. Look deep into my eyes, and whisper to my ears. Speak with
your heart, with your joy and I will know your true self. We may not
have tomorrow, and life is oh so very short.

Spenser The Chocolate Labrador

My new mommy and daddy Neil and Candy had decided to name me Spenser. Other names that were considered were Kona, Reese, Beckett and Tyler. They've decided on "Spenser" because I responded to the name fairly quickly. The way home from Paso Robles, CA was long!!! Yuki (my brother who is a yellow labrador) and I played the whole entire road trip. We stopped a few times to "relax" and eat. Once we got to LA, we've encountered the famous LA traffic jam. It was a long way home. The next day, we went to Chino Hills to see Grandpa and Grandma and Uncle Dennis and Auntie Kim. Auntie Kim also has a blog for Yuki. You can visit his website at YukiBlog.

You can also view additional photos of me and Yuki at Photo Gallery

my name is....

Hi! My name is Spenser. I'm a chocolate labrador with green eyes. I love water and the outdoors. I'm waiting to come home to my new mommy and daddy. I can't wait to meet them so I can play with them. They're picking me up next Saturday. They told me that I'll be living in a loft. I hope I get lots of toys. I'm going to miss my mommy and my brothers and sisters.
